Other InfoHe served in France with the 8th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, armyl no. 20356, until shortly before his 18th birthday on 11th June 1917 when he was returned home. Once he turned 18, he joined the 1st Battalion (‘King’s’) of the Liverpool Regiment, army no. 260357, and served in France and Belgium, marching into Germany (Düren) after the Armistice. In 1918 Alfred was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. (Supplement to the London Gazette 21 October 1918, page 12405.) There is an account of the raid cited below in the 8th battalion diary. Major General C. E. Pereira, C.B. C.M.G. Commanding 2nd Division Congratulates 260356 Cpl. A. DOLTON 1st Bn. The King’s (L’pool Regt.) On the gallant leading of his detachment during a raid on the night of 14th/15th July 1918. (Signed) C. E. Pereira Major General Comdg 2nd Division. B.E.F. 1918. Alfred returned home in February 2010 and was disembodied 20 March 1919.
