Other InfoPrivate C. J. Smallman lied about his age an enlisted in to the Machine Gun Corps at the age of 17 in 1915. He fought in the Battle of the Somme and was wounded. He later became a Colour Sergeant (army number 5241235) in the Worcesters at the ens of the war and served in Germany as part of the British Occupation Force until he was discharged in 1922. Between the end of WW1 and the start of WW2 he was a Euphonium Player in the band of the 8th Battalion. He died at the age of 100 on the 28th April 1998 at the Oaklands Nursing Home.
