Other Info | Born 1889 at Woolwich, son of James William H. Gurney (Barrack Warden with A.S.C. at Aldershot) and Helen Gurney. He enlisted on the 13th July 1909 to the Arrmy Schoolmasters Corp. (age 20 and 7 months) but was discharged on the 19th November 1914 to take up a commission with the 11th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. On the 29th May 1915 promoted to Temporary Lieutenant in the 11th Battalion. Landed with the 11th Battalion at Boulogne on the 21st September 1915 as Lieutenant (Machine Gun Officer). On the 3rd February 1916 was promoted to Temporary Captain. On the 21st November 1917 he relinquished his rank as Temporary Captain on ceasing to be employed by the Battalion and to be Acting Captain with out pay or allowances of that rank. On the 1st July 1919 he relinquished the rank of Acting Captain and reverted to rank of Lieutenant. |
