Other Info | Died age 22. Son of Humphrey and Emily Hemus, of Woodhouse, Wichenford, Worcester. The Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France - Bay 6.
He was a pupil of the Royal Grammar School Worcester from 1906 to 1914.
Donald left in 1914 to go to Trinity College, Dublin and was preparing for Holy Orders, but decided to join the Worcestershire Regiment and was posted to the 3rd Battalion. They were destined to meet with the full force of the 'German Spring Offensive' which opened on 21st March 1918. Donald, with 'B' Company and described in the regimental history as the sole surviving subaltern, was only able to lead his men to safety under cover of darkness on the 22nd. Sadly, during the following afternoon, they were machine-gunned by a German aircraft, and Donald was killed. Like so many casualties of that time, he has no known grave, but his name appears on the Arras Memorial to the missing. |
