Other InfoAt the start of WW1, Shirley was a private in the Honourable Artillery Company, landing in France with the H.A.C. on the 18th September 1914. In 1915 he returned to the UK and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, the Worcester Regiment, on 18 April 1915. He embarked with the 2/7th Battalion from Southampton on the SS Cesarea and reached Havre, France on the 25th May 1915. He was promoted to Temporary Lieutenant on 15th September 1915. He was then seconded to the Machine Gun Corps on 17th May 1917 and appointed Acting Captain on 26th May 1917. He was made Temporary Lieutenant on 1st June 1917, then on 21st June 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant, with precedence from 15th December 1916. Shirley became part of the Tank Corps, which was formed from a section of the Machine Gun Corps in July 1917, and was wounded in late 1917. From 24th January 1918 to 26th September He was second in command of a company retaining the acting rank of Captain. He was promoted to Temporary Captain on the 19th October 1918. He relinquished the temporary rank of Captain on ceasing to be employed by the Tank Corps on the 12th February 1921 and was restored to the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment and on 1st March 1921, he resigned his commission and was granted the rank of Captain. He died on the 12th September 1959 (aged 65), at his home "Larches", 18 North Approach, Moor Park, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.
