Other Info | Arthur Powell Watkins was born in 1891 in Worcester, the son of Alfred Powell Watkins and Selina Watkins (nee Morris). His father died in 1895 when he was only 4 years old. The family lived at 14 Albany Terrace, Britannia Square, Worcester.
After school he worked for the Worcester County Council as a Clerk.
During the First World War he was called up for service on the 12th February 1915 enlisting at Worcester. He was then posted to the Royal Engineers at Reading as a Motor Cyclist with the Divisional Signals Company, being promoted to Corporal the next day (13th). His army number was 69016.
On the 4th November 1915 he was appointed to a commission rank with the 14th Battalion (Severn Valley Pioneers) Worcestershire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant.
On the 16th June 1916 he was posted to France and landed with the 14th Battalion (Severn Valley Pioneers) Worcestershire Regiment at Havre on the 21st June 1916.
On the 5th February 1918 promoted to Lieutenant.
On the 25th July 1917 he was given the temporary rank of Captain serving in 'C' Company.
After recovering from his wounds he was posted to a Service Battalion of the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment (1st August 1919) with the rank of Temporary Captain. |
